Two students from al-Khwarizmi college of engineering manufacture a new device for climbing palms

The department of mechatronics at al-Khwarizmi college of engineering at the university of Baghdad recorded a new scientific achievement that facilitates climbing plams for picking dates and pruning. This project was done by the researchers (Iman Hassan Issa) and (Huda Talib Najim) as requirements of bachelor degree under the supervision of Dr. Maher Yahya Salloum , an instructor at the department. This device is called (palm climber) and it is the first of its kind in Iraq to facilitate the work of the farmers, as well as the preservation of their lives, reducing the cost, and invest the largest possible number of palm, especially at this time that notes that the lack of the farmers in this profession. The project included designing mechanical arms moving via a pneumatic control system that is directed by two signals, the first one is pneumatic coming from a “compressor” and the second one is “arduino” that controls the movement of the device while climbing. The supervisor, Dr. Maher Yahya Salloum stated that this achievement is unique and is of a modern design which will contribute in providing a great service to the agricultural sector, the Iraqi farmers, developing the cultivation and production of dates and the development and supporting the Iraqi economy. For his part, the dean of the college, assistant professor Dr. Usama Fadel Abdel-Latif and heads of departments praised this great scientific achievement submitted by two students from the preliminary studies that demonstrates the advanced scientific level of the college and the enormous potential of students and instructors to innovate sophisticated devices that contribute in finding solutions to the Iraqi society in embodiment of the slogan “university in service of community”. The department works on the implementation of cooperation mechanisms with other ministries to find solutions to the problems at those ministries and to provide engineering consultancy for the various state sectors.
